Waynesville authorizes TrashFlow routing software to modernize solid-waste operations

The Waynesville Town Council authorized public-works staff to purchase and implement TrashFlow routing software after a presentation on operational and efficiency gains.
Hutch Charice, deputy director of operations for public works, said the software will modernize routing, provide real-time tracking of trucks and routes, enable drivers to photograph missed collections and create work orders, and help balance workloads and reduce fuel and overtime costs. He described the rollout as a phased pilot that would be funded from the existing streets and sanitation budget.
Charice gave cost figures for initial implementation: a one-time setup fee of $4,575, an annual technical/cloud-support cost of $1,269, and an initial licensing rate of $247.50 monthly for six trucks, with a stated per-truck add-on of $35 after the initial allocation. He said the software may also support other public-works tasks such as snow removal routing in the future.
Council members pressed for measurable outcomes. One member asked Charice to take a pre-implementation “snapshot” of fuel usage and other costs so the council can compare savings after the software is in use; Charice agreed to provide data from vehicle-usage records.
The motion to authorize purchase and implementation passed by voice vote.
What happens next: Public works staff will move forward with licensing, data migration, training and a pilot phase; the department said it will return usage and performance metrics as the pilot proceeds.
