WFDSS NextGen goes live as authoritative decision system; classic set to read-only

WFDSS NextGen, a redesigned decision-support platform for federal wildland-fire response, went live this week as the authoritative production system for active incidents, a presenter said.
"Production environment of WFDSS NextGen became the authoritative system of record for all active federal wildland fire incidents," Sarah Sinowick of the Wildland Fire Management Research, Development and Application Group told webinar participants. The classic WFDSS environment has been set to read-only for users and will remain available for archival viewing until legacy access is removed.
NextGen emphasizes a map-first interface and automated modeling products that officials say will serve decisions from small (Type 5) incidents up to complex incident management teams. The system integrates national incident feature services and modeling frameworks, and teams may use linked products such as LANDFIRE and the Fire Modeling Services Framework to run spatial analyses inside the application.
Agency administrators will request access and roles through the wildfire application portal (FAMOFT). Sinowick said roles are simplified so each user has one role per instance (for example, EDU vs. production); editors and approvers retain elevated permissions. She recommended approvers confirm training completion in their profiles before signing decisions, and noted that collaborators and implicit collaborators (such as fire behavior analysts) can create and accept analyses.
The RDNA and supporting groups migrated pending decisions manually where necessary; the speaker said two decisions had already been published in NextGen by the end of the deployment week. Officials also emphasized the EDU training environment and the availability of tutorial videos and an agency-administrator refresher recorded sessions to shorten the learning curve.
Known limitations were flagged for immediate attention. "We don't have legacy-data access [yet]," Sinowick said, and multiple-approver workflows and in-app user notifications were not fully implemented on day three. The team is prioritizing workarounds — for example, adding screenshots of signatures into the decision rationale — and continuing archival and access efforts.
Next steps include rolling out pay-table and timekeeping guidance related to incident pay changes (discussed elsewhere in the webinar), finalizing legacy-data access and multi-approver functionality, and publishing additional how-to materials for approvers and geographic-area editors. Officials encouraged attendees to use the WFDSS homepage and the IIA help desk for support and bug reports.
The system's early adoption was described as promising by presenters, who asked agency administrators to treat NextGen decisions in accordance with existing policy: "WFDSS NextGen hasn't changed any of the policy around anything — just making ways to better comply in some places," Sinowick said.
The bureau asked users to plan for reduced features in classic environments (scheduled offline in June per contract limits) and to begin training and role requests early to avoid operational friction when incidents escalate.
The WFDSS team said it will continue to publish updates and tutorials; users were directed to the WFDSS home page, EDU environment, and RDNA support channels for help.
