Flagstaff proclaims March 1 Peace Corps Day; returned volunteers recognized

At the Feb. 24 special meeting, Council member Austin Aslan read a proclamation declaring March 1, 2026, Peace Corps Day in Flagstaff on behalf of Mayor Becky Daggett.
Returned volunteers spoke from the dais. Jim McGeorge, who said he served in Liberia decades ago, noted the high number of returned Peace Corps volunteers in Northern Arizona and described volunteerswork with organizations including NAU, the Forest Service, the Park Service and local nonprofits. McGeorge said the Peace Corps remains funded and active and encouraged interested residents to visit PeaceCorps.gov for more information.
The proclamation highlighted national statistics cited during the reading (more than 240,000 Americans have served since the Peace Corpsfounding; local counts given in the proclamation included 665 volunteers historically from NAU and 21 currently serving from NAU in multiple countries). Council recognized returned volunteers and invited them to participate in a photo and to speak briefly.
