Resident recounts rollover near University Boulevard; council says it will study safety options

Sam Edwards, a Rexburg resident, told the City Council on Sept. 18 that his daughter and her caregiver were involved in a traffic incident on Aug. 26 at University Boulevard and Golden Beauty Drive. Edwards said the Idaho vehicle collision report is filed under case number 20To43655 and that, after misjudging a gap, another driver "rolled up over the hood" of the family's modified van; no one was seriously injured.
Edwards urged the council to track collisions at that intersection and consider safety measures such as a median or traffic signal. "I'm bringing this to the City Council's attention...I'm only here to make you aware of this particular incident," he said, adding that there were several witnesses and that police reports should show patterns of near misses.
Mayor and council members acknowledged the intersection has been hazardous since a recent traffic pattern change and said the city is in early discussions with traffic engineers. "We're looking at that and trying to figure out what is the best solution there," the mayor said. No formal study or funding decision was made at the meeting; council members asked staff to follow up and provide updates.
The council did not commit to a specific countermeasure at the Sept. 18 meeting.
