Rexburg opts for VersaCourt modular tiles to add pickleball courts at Smith Park

Rexburg City Council voted Aug. 21 to proceed with VersaCourt modular tile surfacing to convert Smith Park tennis courts to six pickleball courts and declined a 10–12 foot extension of the asphalt footprint.
Public works presented three options: repair and repaint acrylic surfacing (cheapest up front but higher recurring repaint costs), VersaCourt modular tiles (mid-range cost with stronger warranty), and an alternative tile option from Sports West (highest initial cost). Staff identified rough totals of about $80,000 for acrylic resurfacing, roughly $137,000 for VersaCourt tiles, and as much as $166,000–$204,000 for the other tile option depending on vendor scope and contingencies.
“The VersaCourt probably is the the better of the two to go with,” the presenter said after walking council through warranties, expected maintenance, and the tradeoffs of extending the asphalt. Council members discussed sightlines, lighting, future tournament use and long-term cost comparisons before a motion to negotiate with VersaCourt and proceed without extending the asphalt passed by voice vote.
What’s next: Staff will negotiate contract terms with VersaCourt, return final prices and warranty details to council, and proceed with project scheduling and contingency planning.
