The Rexburg City Council on July 17 approved Resolution 2024-06 to include $65,703 of foregone tax proceeds in the fiscal year 2025 budget to help fund a police patrol position.
Matt Nielsen (finance staff) explained the city created foregone balances during the COVID period when it accepted federal funds and did not raise property taxes; the council has been drawing down portions of that foregone balance over recent years to fund public-safety needs. Nielsen told the council the amount to be added to next year’s budget for the patrol position is $65,703 and that roughly $27,000 remained in foregone balance for potential future use.
No members of the public offered testimony for or against the resolution during the public hearing. A council member moved to approve Resolution 2024-06; the motion passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Ending: The approved resolution adds the specified foregone-tax amount to the FY2025 budget to support the patrol position; any further hiring or spending will occur through the normal staffing and budget processes.
