Aberdeen Central’s one-act 'Antigone Now' wins state 'superior' rating; technical theater honored

Aberdeen Central High School’s one-act production 'Antigone Now' received statewide recognition at the recent state one-act festival. Paige Tidi, the district’s new theater director, told the board the production was judged 'superior' among double-A schools and that four of the school's actors earned individual acting awards. "We received an overall superior for the show itself," Tidi said, adding the school also earned a superior rating in technical theater — the first time Aberdeen Central has received that honor.

The production was a modern retelling of Sophocles’ Antigone. Tidi said the cast and crew met beginning in December and completed set-up, performance and tear-down within the 45-minute limit required at the festival. She introduced several students and staff who participated, including student actors Cadence Germain, CJ LaCroix, Penelope Vogel and Sydney Heinzen and tech contributors including Tanner Scholtes and assistant director Zach Lopez.

Board members asked logistical questions about rehearsal schedules and the 45-minute festival rule; Tidi said the troupe finished in about 44 minutes. The board praised the students and staff for the achievement and for providing arts opportunities that give students a platform to excel.

The board did not take any action beyond recognition; presenters said most student award-winners were unable to attend the meeting because of other obligations. The district plans to continue supporting theater and technical theater programs in the coming year.
