First graders sing and Germantown band recounts Madrid trip at board meeting

Board members and the public heard two student music segments at the Feb. 17 meeting. Rockfield first graders demonstrated a lesson connecting listening, drawing and emotional response; music teacher Mr. Paddock explained the lesson objectives and state standards focused on how students respond and connect to music.
Germantown High School band director John Bell presented an illustrated recap of the band’s January trip to Madrid: the group toured Toledo and Segovia, visited the Prado Art Museum and performed concerts and a parade appearance that organizers said drew crowds of hundreds of thousands. Student speakers described the Prado as a highlight and said the parade experience and cultural exchange with Spanish audiences were memorable. Parent chaperone Beth Deschamps, who has taken multiple international trips with the program, praised the students’ behavior and the tour logistics.
Board members thanked the music staff and students, with Dr. Reuter calling the kindergarten serenade he heard during a building walkthrough "the best part of my whole year as a superintendent." The board noted that student showcases help trustees understand classroom work and expressed appreciation for the district’s arts programming.
