Thornton council appoints three associate judges to municipal court

Thornton City Council on Feb. 24 voted unanimously to add three names to the municipal court’s list of associate judges for the term running Feb. 24, 2026, through March 31, 2027.
Presiding Municipal Court Judge Tiffany Soares explained that the municipal code requires council to appoint associate judges and that the court conducted a standard, redacted recruitment process: 13 applications were received and eight candidates were interviewed by a panel that included court staff and human resources. Soares recommended three candidates to replenish the bench: Jennifer Torrington (former district-court judge with experience in civil and criminal dockets), Eric Hutchins (former prosecutor now serving as a relief/associate judge in multiple jurisdictions), and Ari Kershiver (experienced municipal defense attorney and supervisor in the Denver Municipal Public Defender’s Office).
Soares said the panel’s selection was based on interviews and prior professional experience and described each candidate’s relevant background. Councilmember Alge moved the resolution to appoint the recommended candidates; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
What’s next: The appointees will be available to hear municipal dockets and serve as part of Thornton’s pool of associate judges. The resolution covers appointments through March 31, 2027.
