Board rejects boys soccer storage-shed plan as presented, asks for multiuse, fully funded proposal

The East Grand Forks school board discussed a volunteer-led plan to construct a storage shed for the boys soccer program and voted against approving the proposal in its current form on March 2.
Supporters, including Speaker 9, described volunteer fundraising and donor interest to build the facility and said it would save the district money. Opponents, including Speaker 1 and Speaker 2, said the plan as presented risked inequitable treatment of girls’ programs and lacked firm, 100% funding commitments. “I think there just needs to be more of a business plan,” Speaker 1 said, urging a multiuse design and clearer funding guarantees before the board commits public approval. Speaker 2 emphasized the district’s current budget deficit and said the district itself cannot fund the facility without outside support.
After extended discussion about location, keys/access, whether separate closets could be included in a larger facility and the need to involve athletic directors and boosters, the board took a vote and the motion failed 4–1. Several board members encouraged the applicant to return with a revised plan that is multiuse, fully funded and vetted with coaches and community partners.
No formal district funds were approved for the project at the meeting.
