Summary
Student representatives from Greeley Central told the board their restrooms need ADA upgrades and asked to be included in the facilities master plan. Board members thanked the students and said they would consider the concern while noting funding constraints and past bond efforts.
Three student representatives from Greeley Central High School — Abigail Tovar, Era Reyes and Ramon Gomez Esquivel — addressed the Board of Education on Feb. 23 and raised a recurring facilities concern: several restrooms at Greeley Central are not fully ADA accessible.
Ramon Gomez Esquivel described how inaccessible bathrooms disrupt students and staff and asked the board to include student perspective in the district’s facilities master-plan discussions. "Fixing the restrooms so the bathrooms will be fully ADA accessible needs to happen if Central is to accommodate all the students," he said.
Board members responded with appreciation for the students’ leadership and honesty. Director Edmonds described attending the school’s cultural assembly and commended student pride; the presiding officer acknowledged hearing the restroom concern but did not promise immediate action, noting past bond issues had included plumbing/toilet fixes at other high schools.
Superintendent Dr. Deirdre Pilch’s report immediately following the student presentations included operational announcements — freshman transition nights, two Betcher scholarship finalists from the district (Sofia Vasquez and student representative Sarah Venegas), and personnel recommendations to hire John Kleyber as principal at Toynton Academy and Caleb Flores as assistant principal at Franklin Middle School. Those personnel items were included on the consent agenda that the board approved later in the meeting.
Next steps: students requested a follow-up meeting to discuss the facilities master plan; the board acknowledged the request and indicated district staff would consider student input when planning future facilities work.
