SEMCOG presented a $725,560 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) award to Rochester Hills on the city council dais for pedestrian crossing improvements along John R., city officials said.
“Over the last 17 years, TAP has been able to invest a $120,000,000 in 185 projects across Southeast Michigan,” SEMCOG director Amy O’Leary said, describing TAP as a federal program administered regionally under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
The city and SEMCOG said the project — funded through a regional call for pedestrian-safety proposals and identified in the city master plan — will add refuge islands and flashing beacons to three unsignalized crossings: one across from Thelma Spencer Park, one across from Holy Family School, and one across from Borden Park. A city speaker acknowledged engineering staff Keith Depp, Amira Barrett and Tracy for preparing the grant materials.
Council members and SEMCOG representatives paused for a photo after the presentation. The council did not take a formal vote on the award during the presentation; the grant presentation was ceremonial and city staff will handle implementation and construction scheduling, officials said.
Mayor and other city speakers thanked SEMCOG for the funding; in remarks the city speaker referred to the amount as “$725,000,” while the grant documentation announced at the meeting specified $725,560.
City staff will oversee final design and construction scheduling and will coordinate with SEMCOG and regional partners on federal requirements tied to the TAP award. No further action by the council was recorded in the transcript at the time of the presentation.
