The Iberia Parish Economic Development District No. 1 voted unanimously Dec. 18 to publicize an ordinance that would alter the boundaries of the district and authorize the levy of a sales tax in the areas to be added. Councilman Michael Landry moved the measure and Councilman Pillar was recorded as the second; the board voted unanimously to publicize the ordinance.
The ordinance, read into the record by the presiding official, was described as altering the boundaries of Economic Development District No. 1 and authorizing a sales tax in the newly included areas. A parish official summarized the change as "the exact same thing we . . . been talking about for the last several weeks. Nothing changed. Exact same area." The official offered to name specific areas but the record shows not all specific parcels or boundary lines were read into the transcript.
Members asked procedural questions about why the district was taking the step again. A council member from District 2 asked why the measure was before the taxing district despite earlier committee and council review; the presiding officer explained that committee review and full council review do not substitute for the taxing district’s own approval vote.
