Atascadero staff preview general plan, EIR and zoning ordinance updates as commission approves consent calendar

Atascadero, Calif. — The Atascadero City Planning Commission on Feb. 14 approved the consent calendar and heard City staff outline a series of upcoming planning items, including the circulation of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and a comprehensive zoning ordinance update tied to a parallel general plan revision.
"We are hoping to have both the general plan and zoning ordinance adopted by June," the Director in Community Development said, urging commissioners to follow related City Council hearings and review the EIR during its public comment period. Staff noted the EIR will be circulated for a 45-day public review period, during which the public and council can provide comments.
Commissioner Fanacio highlighted a Feb. 10 City Council presentation on the updated building code, which the City reviews and adopts on a three-year cycle. Staff also described pending zoning changes including new mixed-use and a flex/innovation zone, and said a comprehensive zoning ordinance overview will be provided to the commission before recommendation hearings so commissioners can review materials in advance.
The commission approved the consent calendar after Commissioner Heath moved to approve; the roll call showed all present voting yes and one absence. Staff invited commissioners and members of the public to a "coffee with a planner" outreach series (every third Thursday of the month, 9 a.m., at locations such as Amsterdam downtown) to ask questions and provide feedback, and provided a staff email for follow-up (kellygleason@atascadero.org).
Staff asked commissioners to monitor upcoming council hearings (the next is March 10 on mixed-use zoning standards) and to watch meeting playbacks on the city's website or YouTube channel ahead of recommendation hearings.
The commission adjourned with its next meeting scheduled for March 3, 2026.
