El Campo — The City Council approved CDC funding not to exceed $400,000 for an infrastructure construction grant to Western Smokehouse Partners, the business that acquired the project previously assigned to Junior Smokehouse.
Staff told the council the CDC board rescinded the original grant to Junior Smokehouse and unanimously approved the same infrastructure grant to Western Smokehouse Partners, payable upon receipt of a certificate of occupancy and invoices. Staff noted the developer will extend gas service to the Mizell area at its own cost; BLS will be the contractor and Matt Borman, identified in staff remarks as BLS’s chief operating officer, was described as planning to meet the council.
Speakers described the proposed facility as about 52,000 square feet across two parcels and said the project requires a special‑use permit and easement adjustments to consolidate parcels and enable expansion. Staff said the company anticipates adding about 15 employees per year and that the CDC will monitor compliance with any job commitments; the speaker noted the company has previously reached about 140 employees.
A council motion to approve the CDC funding as presented passed by voice vote. Staff said they would return with any additional steps required by the CDC conditions.
