Miami Lakes PSC approves $600 golf-cart safety PSA and orders 'Slow down, keep Miami Lakes safe' signs

The Town of Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee approved production funding for a golf-cart safety public service announcement and authorized an order of 150 traffic-safety yard signs aimed at slowing drivers.

On the golf-cart safety campaign, the committee discussed legal limits and enforcement jurisdictions (Miami Lakes vs. Miami-Dade County roads) and agreed the PSA should clearly state where carts are allowed and emphasize safety rules. The committee voted to allocate $600 for production: "I make a motion to approve the video for $600," a member said; the motion passed without recorded opposition. The PSA will be scripted in coordination with Lieutenant York and will include examples (seat belts/mirrors/children) and ending text listing streets where carts are prohibited.

The committee then reviewed a proposed yard sign concept reading "Slow down — Keep Miami Lakes safe" that included several pictograms (ducks, child with ball, dog, wheelchair). Members debated whether pictograms distracted drivers and whether the sign should be simplified to text only. A proposal to remove pictograms failed in a straw poll; the committee then accepted a main motion to order 150 signs (at a quoted price of $982.50) and, on a separate amendment, add a local "cow" icon for community recognition. The motion carried.

Committee leaders said the signs are conditional on town-management guidance about size and placement. Committee members emphasized that the main goal is a simple, readable reminder to motorists: "Slow down. Keep Miami Lakes safe," one member summarized.
