The Lakewood City Council on Feb. 23 approved Ordinance O‑2026‑9, authorizing a $155,000 supplemental appropriation from general funds to pay city clerk costs for the special municipal election scheduled for April 7, 2026.
Clerk’s staff explained that the election will be conducted primarily by mail ballot under Title 31 procedures but that the city clerk’s office will operate as an election headquarters open to the public on election day (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) to provide replacement ballots, voter registration assistance and drop‑box services. Clerical hours in the weeks leading up to the election were described as standard office hours (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), with expanded coverage on election day.
Councilor Lowe asked for clarity about in‑person voting options and staffing capacity; the city clerk said the office has increased election judges, replacement ballots and personnel in anticipation of citywide turnout and that the office can issue replacement ballots and process registrations through election day.
A public hearing on the appropriation had no speakers. A clerical date correction was noted in the ordinance language; the council voted to adopt the ordinance on second and final reading by an 11‑0 margin.
