Budget committee recommends $17,550 automatic gate for road facility, sets budget calendar and lists emergency aid allocations

The Woodford County Budget & Finance Committee voted to recommend purchase of an automatic gate for the road/maintenance facility and reviewed the county’s budget calendar and several upcoming allocations and programs.
Director Wade said the key-operated automatic gate would "allow smoother access, in and out of the road department, especially after hours," help track in/out access, and aid EMS and fuel-truck access during off hours. He presented an estimate from Eads Fence Company for $17,550 and told the committee surplus maintenance funds could cover the cost even though the item was not explicitly budgeted.
Committee members asked about backup power; Director Wade said a standby generator could provide backup for electric failures. Squire Taylor moved to recommend the expense to the full fiscal court, Squire Carl seconded, and the committee approved the recommendation by unanimous voice vote.
The presiding officer reviewed the county’s budget timeline: April 1 (detention center budget presentation), committee meetings in early and mid-April, a public hearing and full fiscal court budget presentation on May 1, a committee-of-the-whole meeting on May 12 (primary opportunity for major changes), a first reading on May 26 and a second reading on June 23. The county attorney reminded members that salaries for magistrates, the coroner, the county attorney and deputies must be set by the first Monday in May and should be scheduled accordingly.
The presiding officer also said he will present an "emergency basic needs" resolution to allocate previously budgeted money to Bluegrass Community Action, the Woodford Foundation, the food pantry, the station and the Woodford County Salvation Army for emergency basic-needs assistance, including flood survivor aid. He said the county will also rework the Woodford County Young and New Farmer Grant application to request more detailed information about applicants’ farming operations before the next committee meeting.
The committee adjourned with the gate-buy recommendation and the budget calendar items moving forward to full-court consideration.
