Socorro officials told residents at the start of their regular council meeting that reporters have raised the possibility of a federal facility near the city but that no formal notice or verified details have been received.
"This is very early information, and the city has not received formal notification or verified details through official channels," said Isabella Perez, who introduced the agenda and read the city's statement. Perez said city staff would "work with all members of the county and all of our elected delegations to seek more information, follow the law, and ensure that the safety and well-being of our residents remains at the forefront of every decision and every conversation." She asked the public for patience while officials gather verified information.
The statement did not identify a federal agency or provide a timeline for when the city expects confirmation. Perez said the city would not provide additional comment beyond the statement "at this time."
The announcement came at the meeting's opening and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and ceremonial recognitions. City officials did not vote, direct staff to take legal action, or set a formal follow-up at the meeting; they said updates would be shared as verified information becomes available.
