Socorro proclaims March 2026 as "Theater in Our Schools Month"

The Socorro City Council unanimously proclaimed March 2026 as "Theater in Our Schools Month," recognizing the role of theater education in student development and community life.

The proclamation, read into the record by a council reader, praised theater for encouraging "creativity, collaboration, confidence, and critical thinking" and specifically named Socorro High School and America's High School and the Socorro Independent School District for providing theater programs. The resolution stated the proclamation "honors the dedication, creativity, and talent of theater students and educators at Socorro High School and Americas High School."

Emil Chaparro, who introduced himself as a Socorro High graduate, vice chair of the City of Socorro Community Initiative and the theater director at America's High School, thanked the council for the recognition and said the schools were "very honored to be here tonight." Anthony Miccia, identified as the theater president at America's High School, told the council, "I think this is really big and I really appreciate this opportunity to really bring forth the attention to theater, the importance of theater in our communities."

The proclamation encourages residents to support theater education and arts advocacy throughout the Socorro Independent School District. Council members presented the proclamation to the students and invited them to take a photo with the council. The council listed the proclamation as passed and approved during the Feb. 19 meeting.
