Panel passes bill to open most records of Supreme Court nominating commission to public

TOPEKA — The Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs voted to pass Senate Bill 299 to the floor. Jason (committee staff) summarized the bill as an amendment to KSA 20-123 that would make records of the Supreme Court Nominating Commission subject to the Open Records Act, with the exception of applicants or nominees for judicial office whose records may remain closed.
Senator Blue moved the bill out favorably and Senator Murphy seconded; the committee voice-voted in favor and the bill was recorded as passing and heading to the Senate floor.
Jason noted that if a pending constitutional amendment regarding judicial selection passes in August, the bill could become moot because it addresses judicial selection records; otherwise, SB 299 would remain in force if enacted by the Legislature.
