Landowner seeks rezoning in Haddix Crossroads area; neighbors told request is for family housing

The Pitt County Board of Commissioners heard a public hearing on a rezoning request for 45.62 acres at the southeast corner of County Home Road and Ivy Road filed by Christopher Sutton.
Planning staff said the property (Parcel #21731) is currently zoned rural agricultural and that the Envision Pitt County 2045 future land use map designates the area as rural residential. Staff told the board the planning board reviewed the application on Jan. 21 and recommended approval by an 11-0 vote, and staff recommended the rezoning as consistent with the comprehensive plan.
Chris Sutton told the board the land is family-owned and the rezoning request is intended to allow a single side-by-side duplex to house family members with housing needs, not to create a subdivision. "It's for our family's use and to have housing for them," Sutton said, adding that he had spoken with neighbors and received warm responses.
No other speakers addressed the rezoning during the hearing. After the public hearing closed, the board took the matter up with a motion and asked for a vote.
