Fagg said the funds previously lapsed from psychiatric and OB‑GYN student loans into a specialty loan program and that more than 40 medical students remain on the program’s waiting list. He argued the money should be used for those students, who will serve rural Kansas upon completing their education.
The chair asked to defer detailed discussion to next week’s bill‑work session to allow members with time constraints to participate, but the subcommittee concurred with the higher education subcommittee recommendations and agreed to review proviso language when the appropriation bill is worked.
