The City Council accepted and approved a consent‑calendar item recognizing the Downey Kiwanis Foundation’s donation of a new children’s playground at Rio Hondo / St. Gabriel Park.
Carmen Vasquez Landrucic, president of the Downey Kiwanis Foundation, said the foundation has been active for more than 40 years and has awarded more than $6,000,000 in grants and scholarships. She invited council and the public to the foundation’s scholarship banquet on May 7, 2026 at the Rio Hondo Event Center, where the group will award more than 45 scholarships totaling over $140,000.
Council pulled item 6 for a brief recognition so members could thank the foundation publicly. After comments and a motion to approve, the council approved item 6 as worded in the agenda packet; the motion carried unanimously.
Councilmembers discussed returning with staff if they want to consider naming the playground after a longtime Kiwanian and asked staff to bring back any necessary process or financial details. No additional fiscal actions or budget modifications were made during the meeting beyond the consent approval.
