Board adopts county AI and acceptable-use personnel policy, directs procedural follow-up

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors voted Feb. 23 to adopt amendments to the county's personnel policies that add an AI policy and expand acceptable-use rules for county employees.
Troy Cole, the county IT director, told the board the proposed policy is a framework to manage AI'related risks including handling of sensitive operational data, personally identifiable information and CJIS-protected material; he also warned about algorithmic bias and AI hallucination and said all AI outputs must be reviewed before incorporation into official deliverables. The policy requires additional security training and calls for IT to be more involved in procurement and review of technology purchases.
Board members raised implementation questions ranging from disabling removable-media ports to establishing secure network separation and emphasized that the policy should be a living document with department-level procedures. After discussion the board voted 7-0 to adopt the policy; members asked staff to draft more-detailed procedures and training materials under the board-approved framework.
