Planning commission approves Kitchens Craft Barbecue beer‑and‑wine permit at former Gus’s Deli site

The Planning Commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit on Feb. 11 to allow Kitchens Craft Barbecue to sell beer and wine for on‑site consumption at 8320 Alondra Boulevard, the longtime site of Gus’s Deli.

Associate Planner Ivan Reyes described the 7,000‑square‑foot site and 3,500‑square‑foot building, and said the restaurant plans to operate 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday with alcohol sales ending at 8:30 p.m. Seating would remain similar to the prior tenant: 90 indoor seats and 22 outdoor patio seats (112 total). Staff noted alcohol storage would be employee‑only in a walk‑in cooler and that no off‑site alcohol sales or amplified music were requested.

Because on‑site parking is limited, Reyes said the business has a one‑year parking agreement with Emmanuel Church to provide off‑site spaces; staff recommended a three‑month compliance review of off‑site parking impacts and an annual project compliance report at the one‑year mark. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Paramount Public Safety reviewed the request and provided a list of standard safety conditions (e.g., cameras, ID checks) included in the draft resolution.

The applicant’s representatives — David Kitchen (COO) and owner David Lee Kitchen — spoke in support and described the business’s community ties and from‑scratch approach to food. Commissioner Gonzales moved to adopt Planning Commission Resolution PC26002 approving CUP No. 987; the motion passed unanimously (Esparza, Gonzales, Weisenberger and Chair Timmons voting yes).

City staff will monitor parking and operational impacts per the conditions of approval.
