Council approves $80,421.50 change order for wastewater plant foundation work

The La Marque City Council approved Change Order CO2 for the wastewater treatment plant improvements project to add additional drilled geopiers after contractors encountered weaker-than-expected subsurface conditions.
Public works staff explained that the site’s subgrade required about 60–80 additional geopiers to secure the foundation. Project staff said the increase of $80,421.50 would be paid from an available contingency in the GLO grant previously set aside for construction increases.
“It's concrete pillars that they put into the ground as they build the foundation,” a public works representative explained when asked what a geopier is. Councilmembers asked for further detail about the number and depth of added piers; staff said they would provide that information to council on request.
Council approved the change order on a unanimous voice vote. Staff said the contingency had anticipated up to a 25% increase to cover unexpected conditions.
