O'Fallon Veterans Commission approves agenda, discusses coin order, ceremonies and memorial changes

The O'Fallon Veterans Commission approved its meeting agenda and the minutes from June 16 before turning to administrative reports and event planning.
A commission member reported that a commemorative coin order—previously quoted at $599 for 100 coins—was negotiated to a unit price of $5.42, for a total of $542; the purchaser said production began July 11 and the coins are expected at the next meeting. The commission account balance was reported at about $1,600 prior to the payment.
Commissioners reviewed schedules for several upcoming events. Les Segenmeier described a VA-led SAVE (suicide-prevention) program set for Aug. 2 at the O'Fallon Elks Lodge and an Aug. 16 session focused on the PACT Act and exposure concerns. He also previewed a Texas Hold'em fundraiser scheduled for Sept. 27, to be held with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and asked members to help distribute flyers and recruit attendees.
Bob Blake reported the "Wall That Heals" exhibit will be at Jefferson Barracks Park (Gold Star Pavilion) from Thursday through Sunday; he said the opening ceremony is at 10 a.m. Thursday and the closing ceremony is at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the display available 24 hours on Saturday for veterans who prefer to visit alone.
Sheldon Hartsfield raised a separate discussion about whether to add a Space Force element to the memorial. Members agreed the question requires design work and budget clarity; the group suggested convening a subcommittee with city council representation and local artists to develop concepts that minimize impact on the memorial's original design.
The chair assigned a deadline for identifying a point of contact for the March Vietnam Veterans ceremony: a volunteer or a joint group must be named at the next meeting because of the short lead time between the February workshop and the March event.
At the meeting's close, members rose for a benediction and the chair adjourned the session.
