Resident raises concerns about transgender athletes; superintendent says state guidance is changing

A member of the public used the board's public comment period to question policies on transgender athletes. Bill Draghi told the board he had heard that a female Olympic boxer had "extra male chromosomes" and argued that such competitors should not be allowed to fight cisgender women.

"I would say there's nothing wrong with that because they were both women," Draghi said, then expressed concern about allowing what he described as a more masculine body to compete against other women. He referenced statements attributed to Governor Murphy and asked whether the law would require the more masculine athlete to be permitted to fight.

Superintendent Mr. Grande responded that the district follows state guidance, and he said approaches to transgender students are "being examined at the state level as we speak." He indicated that guidance and related rules are changing and under consideration by state authorities.

The board did not take action at the meeting related to transgender student participation policies; the superintendent framed the matter as an evolving state-level guidance issue rather than a current local board policy decision.
