The Grand Rapids Public School District’s endowment committee reported awards totaling $58,175.60 in the most recent granting cycle, funding 48 of 65 requests from staff and schools.
Bianca Karjalainen, representing the endowment, said the committee received grant requests totaling about $131,000 and was able to award $58,175.60 in full or partial grants. Funded requests included transportation for field trips, musical instruments, STEM projects, PE equipment, debate program support and calming or alternative seating for classrooms.
Awarded schools included the alternative learning center, Bigfork, Cohasset, East and West elementary schools, the district’s high school and middle school. The committee highlighted programs such as a poet‑in‑residence at the middle school and arts funding to supplement programming.
What’s next: the endowment will continue its grant cycle and district staff said they will publicize funded programs and consider lessons for future cycles.
