U.S. Commission on Civil Rights approves state advisory committee appointments for eight states

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on Feb. 21 approved appointments to state advisory committees in Maryland, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Virginia.
The motion to appoint the listed individuals was made by Chair Rochelle Garza and seconded by Commissioner Harriott. The roll-call vote recorded five votes in favor, no votes opposed and three abstentions. If the motion passes, the commission authorized the staff director or a designee to execute the appropriate paperwork for the appointments.
Chair Rochelle Garza thanked the appointees and emphasized the role of advisory committees in the agency’s work on civil rights. "It is the privilege as the chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to express my sincere gratitude to each of you for your dedication to civil rights and justice," she said.
Commissioner McIntyre, who voiced explicit support during discussion, praised staff and commissioners for recruitment efforts and said the slate provided opportunities for bipartisan and geographically diverse participation. "I'm really happy that we've ... gotten this done," McIntyre said.
The names of the chairs of the newly appointed state advisory committees were read into the record: Kendra Brown (Maryland), Roland Huang (Michigan), Kendall Scott (Montana), Robert George (New Jersey), Steven Pogue (New York), Andy Lester (Oklahoma), Elena Shea Shi (Rhode Island) and Lisonbee Soman (Virginia). The commission read longer lists of additional appointees for each state during the meeting.
The appointees will serve as uncompensated government representatives on their respective advisory committees. The commission’s staff will complete the administrative steps to finalize the appointments.
