Akron school board accepts $23,000 Vernard Fund gift for multiple schools

The Akron Public School Board on Sept. 23 accepted a $23,000 gift from the David R. and Cheryl L. Vernard Fund at the Akron Community Foundation to support school grants across the district.
Superintendent Dr. Robinson introduced the Vernard family and described an initial $10,000 grant that has since grown to include payments to 14 schools, with plans to expand. "If you do one little thing, it can grow and multiply," a member of the Vernard family said during the board recognition.
The board moved and voted on a resolution to accept the gift. Member Alexander moved the measure and Ms. Hall seconded it. After brief remarks thanking the donors and district family liaisons, the board voted by roll call: six yes, zero no and one abstention (Missus Sykes). President Autry thanked the Vernard family and asked the board and community to acknowledge the donors with applause.
The board packet identifies schools and amounts the district will distribute; Superintendent Robinson said the grant pool is structured to replenish and add schools over time. The board did not discuss changes to district policy or long-term commitments tied to the gift.
The board carried the resolution to accept the Vernard Fund distribution (motion approved 6-0, 1 abstention). The district said it will publish distribution details in routine board documentation and communications going forward.
