CRA outlines near‑shore reef deployment and live camera plans for March

CRA staff updated the board Dec. 4 on the near‑shore reef program and plans for a public viewing camera. Staff said Shelby Thomas has a contract with a barge company that estimates reef deployment the week of March 17, which staff described as the window when weather conditions are most likely to be suitable. If weather allows, deployment could be completed in a day; otherwise the work may extend to two days.
Staff said they plan to pre‑install conduit and camera stub‑ups before reef deployment so a live underwater camera feed can go active once the reef is in place. The camera fabricator and installer are coordinating mounts and a maintenance schedule: the installer will perform quarterly maintenance visits and will be on call to respond if issues arise between scheduled visits. Staff is working with Crown Castle and the city IT department to ensure connectivity and livestream capability.
Board members asked staff to accelerate the schedule where possible. Staff agreed to note windows of anticipated calm seas and coordinate the barge schedule if earlier deployment opportunities arise.
Next steps: install conduit and stub‑ups at selected sites, finalize mounting details with fabricator, receive and commission the camera and coordinate IT and Crown Castle for live streaming.
