Contractor says Hollywood reef deployment shows rapid growth; change-order request due in September

Dr. Shelby Thomas reported to the Hollywood City Redevelopment Agency on July 2, 2025, that the recently deployed reef site has seen rapid biological growth and strong community interest. "We're going to be approaching in September with a change order request and just wanted to give a heads up," Thomas said, adding that documentation will be provided to the CRA when the agency reconvenes in September.
Thomas said community engagement has been high, noting visitors came from Jacksonville and California to dive at the site. She compared the inshore site's growth to an offshore site and said, "what took us 4 to 5 months, we've seen the growth on this site within a month and a half." She said the project team is monitoring the reef continuously, plans some maintenance and community programs, and is assessing permits and potential relocation of extra corals.
Thomas named potential partners including FAU, Nova Southeastern and Sea and Shoreline and said additional corals may be available. She described continuing diving activity through Independence Day and said a formal change-order package will follow in September for agency review. The meeting record shows no action or vote on the reef item at this session.
