French Hill: open the government with a clean CR; blames Schumer for halting appropriations progress

When asked whether Republicans should offer an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies to reopen the government, Republican Congressman French Hill said the priority should be opening the government with a clean continuing resolution so appropriations can proceed.
"I don't think the government should be closed right now," Hill said. He said House Republicans had supported a clean continuing resolution to allow the appropriations process to continue and said the effort was "abruptly stopped by a decision taken by minority leader Schumer in the senate." He called that "a mistake" and described the Democrats' approach as a "cynical attitude," saying it harms military families and national guardsmen who face unemployment or interrupted services.
Hill defended Republican leaders he named — Speaker Mike Johnson and Sen. John Thune — and argued that the appropriations process could continue on a bipartisan basis. He also said past Congresses used continuing resolutions frequently, but he characterized the current shutdown as politically motivated and consequential for families that rely on government services.
