Summary
Village staff demonstrated the new SmartGov permitting system (soft launch), reporting roughly 70 online permit submissions, inspector iPad workflows, and online payment capability; staff said homeowners can mark a checkbox when pulling their own permits.
The Village of Barrington is rolling out SmartGov, a new online permitting and licensing system staff said is intended to speed reviews, reduce paper and let residents check permit status and pay online.
"We are live with the software," Jen, the staff presenter, told the board during a demonstration. She said the village had completed a soft launch with about 70 permits submitted online, contractors registered, and licensing transactions moving to the portal. Inspectors will use iPads to resolve inspections, take photos and send reports in the field.
Jen walked trustees through a brief tutorial on creating an account, applying for a building permit, selecting a project address and uploading plans. She described internal efficiencies: reduced paper storage, automated workflow between divisions and automated applicant notifications upon completion of review.
During questions, a trustee asked whether homeowners doing their own work can still obtain permits. Jen confirmed there is a checkbox that applicants can select to indicate they are performing the work themselves.
The presentation included a contact line for assistance: Development Services at (847) 304-3460, and staff said in-person permit pickups will still be supported if applicants prefer. The board did not take action; the demonstration was informational.
