Chair Rochelle Garza moved to appoint named individuals to serve on the Tennessee and Wisconsin state advisory committees and authorized the staff director or designee to execute appointment paperwork if the motion passed.
The motion was seconded by Commissioner Gail Harriet. During a roll-call vote Vice Chair Victoria Nurse voted yes; Commissioner Adams voted no; Commissioner Gilchrist announced an abstention; Commissioner Harriott voted yes; Commissioner Jones announced an abstention; Commissioner Kirsanau voted yes; Commissioner Glenn Magpentai voted yes; Chair Garza indicated she had abstained during the roll call. The parliamentarian explained that abstentions lower the total for purposes of determining a majority; the chair confirmed the motion passed with four votes in favor, one opposed and three abstentions. Chair Garza congratulated the new advisory committee members and emphasized these committees amplify community voices and help advance civil‑rights work.
The appointees were listed on the Federal Register agenda and include, for Tennessee: Brandon Smith (chair), Nicholas Berry, Gail Jones Carson, Larry Crane, Luke Cymbal, Shaquoyah Smith Gollman, Kathleen Harms, William Terry Ladd III, William Worgan, Denise Smith Martinez, Kianthus Nelson, Muriel Malone Nolan, Kimberly Whitaker and Stell Marie Yarborough; and for Wisconsin: Pooja Bamba Aurora (chair), Matthew Fernholtz, Jennifer Herzog, Elizabeth Lambert, Alexander Lemke, M. Scott Niederjohn, Rachel Sattler, Catherine Casey Steinau, John J D Bridal, Nicholas Truong, Judith Wade and Ryan Walsh. The commission recorded the appointments formally during the roll call and directed staff to complete necessary paperwork.
