Greendale presents safety plan update; students urge drill rotation, crosswalk

District staff presented the Greendale School District safety plan as an information item, saying the plan is compliant with legal requirements and the product of collaboration with the Greendale Police and Fire Departments. The plan emphasizes the Standard Response Protocol, a standard reunification method, threat management procedures, medical emergency response teams and an updated anonymous tip system called "Speak Up, Speak Out."

Speaker Jonathan Mitchell noted physical and procedural improvements already made, including new security cameras, improved entrance controls and ID scanners at the high school, and said future work will focus on communications and continued training. The administration stressed that the safety plan is an informational item that does not require board approval.

Student board members offered concrete feedback on implementation. Nick (Student board member, Speaker 7) said drills are currently practiced during advisory periods and urged rotating drill times so teachers and students experience drills across multiple classes during the year: "I'd say one feedback that I have ... is to kind of rotate that around and really tell teachers ahead of time to be able to prepare, but to do that in different classes throughout the year." Nick also raised safety concerns about pedestrians crossing from the visitor lot and welcomed a planned sidewalk and crosswalk.

Board members thanked staff and first responders for collaboration and noted the plan’s role in ongoing preparedness; the item was informational and no vote was required.
