Committee clears path for bus-shelter public-art installations after minor visibility concerns

Unidentified Speaker 2, who inspected sites and prepared a photo report, noted one shelter near Harbor Athletic where a road curve and a bike rack could slightly reduce sightlines. The committee’s review concluded the older shelter panels are already opaque from sun and wear, and that the artwork would not substantially worsen visibility. “I don't see anyone relying on looking through the bus shelter to make their turn decision,” said Unidentified Speaker 2.
Unidentified Speaker 5 said the city signed a contract with the vendor Alphabrafx and that the installation quote came in roughly $4,000 lower than expected, leaving budget to address a cracked shelter panel. “The quote actually came in like $4,000 lower than we expected,” Unidentified Speaker 5 said, adding that remaining funds can pay for a small repair prior to installation.
The committee confirmed that any cracked panels where artwork will be applied must be repaired before installation. Members did not call for a formal vote to allocate the small repair funds, and staff said they will move forward with scheduling repairs and finalize an installation date once temperatures are consistently warmer.
Next steps: staff will arrange the panel repair, confirm installation timing with Alphabrafx, and report back with a firm installation schedule.
