Panel backs Alzheimer’s training for adult protective services; bill unopposed in committee

Senator Wendy DeBoer introduced LB1055 to require Adult Protective Services (APS) employees to complete dementia‑specific training at hire and once every five years thereafter. DeBoer said caring for people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias requires specialized skills to communicate and de‑escalate situations.
Alex DeGarmo, Nebraska State Government Relations Director for the Alzheimer’s Association, testified in support and noted the Association offers a one‑hour, 6‑minute online module that meets the bill’s requirements. DeGarmo said the training would be at no cost to the state and would improve APS interactions with vulnerable adults and their caregivers.
Committee members had no substantive questions after proponents’ testimony. The chair noted five proponent submissions, one opponent and one neutral comment were filed online; the record shows no in‑room opposition and the sponsor waived closing comments.
LB1055 was presented as a narrow, non‑controversial operational requirement that relies on an existing training module and carries no fiscal note.
