Officials praise coordination in Fredericksburg response to Winter Storm Fern

City public-safety leaders and the new emergency management coordinator, Ashley Morris, briefed the Fredericksburg City Council on the municipal response to Winter Storm Fern and praised coordination among city departments, county partners, utilities and nonprofit partners.

Chiefs and staff credited rapid multi-agency communication, mutual aid and volunteer coordination for limiting impacts. Ashley Morris, the city's emergency management coordinator (named in the meeting), said this was her first full activation and thanked partner organizations: "This event could have been significantly different if we didn't have a lot of the buy in from our businesses and also our private sector in our community." She also reported one shelter opened at the United Methodist Church in partnership with the Red Cross and that four residents used that shelter.

Technical details: City utility staff explained how substation activity and circuit switching were used to restore service to affected areas and why some customers experienced intermittent power as crews alternated circuits to avoid overloads.
