The Skowhegan Select Board voted Sept. 23 to reconsider its prior decision to decline renewal of the town’s EV charging-station contract, after members and the public raised questions about the station’s pricing, condition and contractual maintenance responsibilities.
Amber told the board she had parked at the charging station after the earlier vote and found it is free for the first two hours, with charges only applying after two hours; she said that feature is sometimes used by towns to encourage visits to a business district. "It's free for the first two hours, and you only get charged if you sit on the charger for over 2 hours," she said.
Board members discussed vandalism and physical disrepair observed at the station; one member said the front of the unit was sun-cracked and pulled away, and others noted that ChargePoint, the vendor, is responsible for maintenance under the lease. Members agreed more financial detail from Brian (town staff) and the ChargePoint lease was needed before a final decision. A motion to reconsider the earlier vote was made and carried 4–1.
The board directed staff to provide the lease terms, usage and maintenance history and a financial breakdown so members can evaluate whether renewal or a modified approach is feasible. No final contract change was approved that night; the board will review the additional information before a potential reconsideration vote at a future meeting.
