Planning staff announces new technician and previews residential zoning committee work

At the Jan. 12 meeting of the San Angelo Zoning Board of Adjustment, planning staff announced the hire of a new planning technician and briefed the board on two committees examining residential zoning and the land subdivision ordinance.
Senior Planner Austin Reed introduced the new planning technician, Daniel, and welcomed him to staff. Later, a staff member (Speaker 6) described two committees: one on residential zoning to consider smaller lot sizes and different setbacks for infill areas, and another on the land-development subdivision ordinance. Staff said they plan to discuss proposals internally, seek feedback, and present a red-line draft to City Council in March.
Board members asked clarifying questions about whether new zones would be applied by rezoning rather than variances and about the treatment of double-frontage lots. Staff explained that the goal is to create a residential zone that could reduce the need for variances in infill areas; rezoning single lots would be considered within the process and not necessarily constitute spot zoning.
