Fremont City launches study-table academic support for student-athletes at Ross High

Assistant Superintendent Abby Abernathy told the Fremont City School Board that the district will expand an academic-support approach used by the football program to more student-athletes. "We're starting tomorrow, and they're gonna go from about 02:30 till about 03:45 ish," Abernathy said, describing MondaythroughThursday study tables at Ross High School with sign-in sheets for accountability.
The program will be led by Tony Walker and will let coaches, counselors and an academic adviser (Brandy Ivy) coordinate to identify students who need help with coursework, Abernathy said. The district plans to offer peer tutoring during the school day and to adjust participation by season and student need; coaches have agreed to prioritize academics over practice time when necessary.
Board members praised the plan as flexible and coach-supported. One member said it will help keep more players eligible and keep teams intact: "If there's not the lack of ineligibility, all of a sudden, every team is better because you have all your players," the presiding officer said.
Abernathy said Walker will report back in the winter on early results and refinements. The board did not take a formal vote on the program during the meeting; the presentation served to launch the initiative and solicit board feedback.
