The Frostburg City Board of Elections considered and rejected a motion on Feb. 19 to ask the city to publish a list of people who have filed for candidacy on the city website with a prominent disclaimer. The proposal would have posted names (for example, weekly or on set dates such as the first and fifteenth) and included language clarifying that a filing does not guarantee a candidate will appear on the final ballot.
During debate a board member said publishing filings could create a perception that someone who filed was already confirmed on the ballot, and another member questioned whether the city should do that work when candidates can market themselves. One board member said privately they would vote against the measure, another said they had mixed feelings, and a third indicated support. The motion failed by the end of the discussion.
The presiding officer summarized the concern: posting a list of filers "does not guarantee that they will be on the ballot," and members opted not to petition the city at this time. The board left open the option for community members to request the board or city to take that action in future.
