Planning staff reports Board of Appeals denial of animal exception; county names new in‑house attorney

At the Oct. 2 meeting staff reported results from the September Board of Appeals and personnel news affecting the planning commission.
Staff said the Board of Appeals did not approve a special exception sought by Dylan and Caitlin Baitland Schultz to keep an expanded number of chickens, a peacock and ducks; the board set a timeframe for removing the peacock and prohibited animals or otherwise complying with the permitted limit of hens. Staff said the applicant is "working towards" obtaining supporting documentation from a licensed mental health professional to designate the peacock as an emotional support animal, which, if accepted, would change enforcement action.
In personnel news, staff announced that Bobby Mowell has taken the position of in‑house counsel for the county and will serve as attorney to the Planning Commission beginning Monday. Commissioners acknowledged the update and offered thanks to staff and departing members before adjourning.
No votes were recorded on the animal matter at the Planning Commission; the action described was an informational report about the Board of Appeals decision and the county attorney appointment.
