City leaders and staff ran a facilitated strategic reflection exercise during the Feb. 10 workshop intended to identify strengths, problems, opportunities and threats that will inform the strategy map and upcoming budget process.
City Manager Ben Thatcher Bennett framed the session as a reflective exercise, not a problem-solving meeting, and asked council members to jot single ideas on color-coded post-it notes. Staff (Danny and Nick) collected and grouped the post-its into themes; council members then reviewed the themes and offered brief observations.
Grouped themes included public safety and emergency services, municipal utilities and water supply concerns, downtown walkability and sidewalks, traffic and AMPO projects, growth and development pressures, and quality-of-life items such as parks, trails and events. Council members highlighted recurring community concerns (trees, water supply, county relations, code enforcement) and potential opportunities (grants and bond funding, partnerships, a river-road park and an animal shelter upgrade).
Next steps: the manager said staff would transcribe the exercise and circulate the results to council and department directors for use in budget development and subsequent meetings; council agreed to reconvene on the strategy-map refinement in early March.
Provenance: brainstorming, post-it grouping, and wrap-up took place Feb. 10 (transcript SEG 1214–SEG 1936).
