Commissioners approve expansion of West Ocean City sanitary service area

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. — Worcester County commissioners voted unanimously Dec. 2 to expand the West Ocean City sanitary service area after a public hearing and staff recommendation.
Environmental Programs staff said the petition, processed under Public Works Article 5-305(b)(1), would create an overlapping service-area designation for a small set of properties fronting Route 611 and allow owners to access West Ocean City EDUs without a Water and Sewer Plan amendment. Staff said applicants must pay any required equity contributions, obtain associated capital improvement charge allocations, and rely only on existing excess EDUs transferred from West Ocean City properties.
Hugh Cropper, representing the applicants, told the commission the properties are largely zoned commercial and already lie within Mystic Harbor’s sewer planning area; the expansion aims to provide flexibility to allocate existing EDUs and ease pressure on Mystic Harbor’s capacity.
Commissioners discussed the technical requirements for connection points and the need for public-works-approved tie-in locations. The motion to approve carried 7–0.
