Toledo Board honors journalist Richard R. M. Neller and recognizes 281 years of staff service

The Toledo Board of Education presented a certificate honoring the life and community contributions of Richard Rico Martin Neller at its June 25, 2024 meeting and recognized staff retirees whose combined service totaled 281 years and one month.

Miss Mazer introduced the certificate, saying the board wished to "express our condolences" to the Neller family and to recognize his work as a teacher in Toledo Public Schools, a University of Toledo law student, a local defense attorney, and the founder in 1989 of La Prensa, described in the presentation as a large bilingual Hispanic weekly serving Ohio and Michigan readers.

A musical tribute followed, with Professor Andy Hernandez performing "Cielito Lindo." Board members invited family and friends to come forward and take photographs with the family and board members. The presentation noted plans being discussed for a scholarship honoring Mr. Neller and said the board would keep the public updated.

The board also recognized a list of retirees by name and role, citing individual service lengths and the meeting record’s combined total of 281 years and one month of service to Toledo Public Schools. Named retirees included classified staff, teachers and administrators across buildings and district offices.

Why it matters: The presentation memorialized a community journalist and affirmed the district’s longstanding relationships with families and staff. The retiree acknowledgments highlight institutional memory and the district’s workforce continuity.

The board continued with routine business after the recognitions.
