Sterling Heights names stretch of M-53 as Officer Leroy Imus Memorial Highway

The Sterling Heights City Council voted to recognize Officer Leroy Hugh Imus by naming a portion of State Highway M-53 in his memory.
Police Chief Andy Satterfield introduced Sergeant Lamar Cashat, who explained the multi-year effort to secure legislative approval and community support for the memorial signage. Cashat recounted Imus's service and the 1971 traffic incident that resulted in Imus' death while on duty; he described outreach to state legislators, testimony before committees and the fundraising process that paid for commemorative signs without tax dollars.
Former state Representative Nate Shannon, who sponsored the bill in the House, described the legislative steps required to pass the memorial designation and thanked state and local partners and private donors who contributed to purchase and placement of signs at both northbound and southbound approaches near 18 Mile and Hall Road.
Chief Satterfield and Sergeant Cashat thanked the Imus family, members of the department and local business donors; the council moved and supported a resolution to adopt the designation and approved it by voice vote. Officials said the signs will remain as a permanent tribute to Officer Imus's service.
